One of the main things you will want to pay attention to when you are trying to keep up with the upkeep of your house is your gutters; too many people fail to keep up with their gutters, which makes it a much bigger chore than it should be. And when you fail to keep up with your gutters, it not only makes it much more difficult for you to clean them when the time comes, but it also opens up your roof to the risk of damage - which can damage other parts of your house as well.

Being proactive is the best thing you can do when it comes to keeping your gutters clean – keeping gunk from building up in the gutters in the first place, instead of having to clean the gunk out – and the best way to keep gunk from clogging your gutters is to lay chicken wire over the top of them; when you do this, you will still allow water to get down into your gutters, but all that nasty gunk will stay right there on top.

You should also take the time to clean everything off the top of your gutters on a regular basis – especially after storms hit; this does not need to be a thorough cleaning, as the main thing is for you to make sure the gunk is not building up on top of the chicken wire, which means this cleaning can be done by simply scraping the gunk off with a stick or a broom.

And twice per year – at the beginning and end of the warm weather - you will need to give your gutters a thorough cleaning; such a cleaning should include getting underneath the chicken wire, and also making sure that nothing is built up in the pipes that send the water down to the ground.

When you approach the cleaning of your gutters in this manner, it will be much easier for you to keep up with this job – and your gutters will not start backing up with water, and will also not give you nearly so many problems!
