If you own a fish tank, and you have had an invasion of algae, you certainly know what a nuisance it can be! Algae is bad for the water in which your fish are swimming if it exists in excess, and it is just plain ugly to look at. But while algae is bad for your tank, it is also a tough nemesis, because it can seem nearly impossible to get rid of; that is, unless you know how to get rid of it!

The easiest way to control algae in your tank is to simply add fish or critters who will take care of the algae for you. Regardless of whether you have a freshwater tank or a saltwater tank, you can find great fish for eating algae, and you will also find that snails are an excellent addition for keeping the algae problem under control.

Algae can also occur as a result of overfeeding, as the extra food floating around in the tank will contaminate the water and engender the growth of algae. Keep an eye on your fish after you feed them to make sure they are eating everything by the end of feeding time. If there is leftover food at the end of feeding time, continue to keep an eye on them as you feed them, giving them a little bit less each day until you reach the right amount of food.

A couple things that will speed up the growth of algae are dead fish and dead plants in your tank; chances are, you probably pay close enough attention to your tank to remove such things immediately anyway, but if you have not done so in the past, begin to do so now.

And finally, believe it or not, it will actually help your tank if you have a couple rocks or ornaments with algae on them! If you have some rocks on which algae is growing, do not clean them off; the algae will be more likely to continue growing there than on the walls of your tank.

Algae does not have to be a problem in your fish tank; all you have to do is make sure you are taking the steps to keep it away!
