The great number of choices can seem downright overwhelming, in stores from Target and Walmart to Lowes and Home Depot and even on Amazon! How do you know which bird feeder is the right bird feeder for your yard, or for the birds you hope to attract? This guide can help you better understand your choices if you have been wanting to purchase a bird feeder, and have not been able to figure it all out. Platform feeders are the most basic form of feeders; on these, the seed is simply poured, and the birds are able to land and eat. If you want to attract songbirds as well as other large birds, this is an excellent option. One problem with platform feeders, however, is that they are typically easy for squirrels to get to, and this can cause your seed to disappear quickly. If you decide that a platform feeder is the right choice for you, you will have to make certain you hang it in a place that will keep squirrels from accessing it. The tube feeder is another one of the most popular feeders, with one of the positives of a tube feeder being that squirrels cannot get to the seeds as easily, and with an added bonus of a tube feeder easily being able to feed several birds at once. One problem with tube feeders, however, is that they are often difficult for larger birds to use, which will prevent you from having as large a variety at your feeder as you might like. Another negative of tube feeders is that you must empty, disassemble, and clean your tube feeder every two weeks. There are also specialty feeders that are designed to attract certain birds such as hummingbirds or woodpeckers if you have a certain bird in mind. These feeders do require specialty bird food as well, however, and they can still be attractive to squirrels.
